Start at setting 8 for a medium roast. Finer is a lower number (with the motor running).
Where to start
- Light roast: setting 6. Medium: setting 8. Dark: setting 10.
- Usual espresso range: 1 to 10 (setting).
- One small step: 1 setting.
- Note: espresso only with a pressurised (double-wall) basket.
- The original Encore's steps are too coarse to dial in an unpressurised basket; reviewers agree it works only with pressurised (double-wall) baskets. Baratza's manual suggests 8 for espresso.
The light and dark starting points are two small steps either side of the medium one: our rule of thumb, not the maker's.
